Scott,
Could you go into detail about how to acquire ASCAP and BMI licenses and the costs involved. I'm considering starting an internet station. I realize also there are CARP related fees to be paid, which may not yet be an issue for Podcasts.
Thanks

Hey Tim,
Web streaming licensing is pretty straight forward. You can go to ASCAP, BMI, SESAC and SoundExchange.com on the web and get the permissions. It's roughly a grand per year if you are non-profit. Podcasting is a little more gray at the moment. RIAA (Sound Exchange) is not licensing podcasts yet. They aren't talking with any of us and it may be because our shows are virtually MP3 files and could be perceived as file sharing. The copyright groups have embraced podcasting and the rates are ostensibly the same as for web streaming.
Brian Ibbott at Coverville.com is leading the charge for us podcasters in talking with RIAA about the mechanical licensing issues. In the meantime, we're podcasting as usual in the hope the sane minds will make it possible to nurture and grow the podcast concept.
